Six suspected Russian drone attacks on ships in the Black Sea over ten days mark a dramatic escalation in maritime conflict, bringing warfare closer to NATO member states. The most recent incident involved a Turkish-owned cargo ship, the Alfa Watan, which was struck by suspected Russian air and naval drones approximately 70 miles off the coastal town of Byala, Bulgaria.
The crew of the Bulgarian ferry Dioscuria was the first to spot signs of distress after a distant explosion was heard in the early hours of 6 October. Upon arriving at the scene, the Dioscuria discovered an overturned lifeboat and lifejackets floating in the water, though the ten-member crew of the Alfa Watan remained missing. These incidents underscore the growing reach of the conflict beyond Ukraine’s borders, directly affecting NATO-aligned nations such as Bulgaria and Romania.
