Anthropic, the artificial intelligence company behind Claude AI, has leased a significant new office space in London, signaling plans to expand its UK workforce from 200 employees to potentially 800, according to sources familiar with the matter. The move comes as the San Francisco-based company faces increasing regulatory pressure in the United States.
The expansion aligns with the UK government’s push to position London as a global AI hub. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has actively courted AI firms, hosting the first global AI Safety Summit last year. “This is a vote of confidence in the UK’s approach to AI regulation,” said a government official speaking on condition of anonymity.
Industry analysts note the timing coincides with mounting scrutiny of Anthropic in Washington. The Federal Trade Commission recently launched an inquiry into AI investments by major tech companies, including Anthropic’s backers Amazon and Google. “When regulatory winds shift, companies look for friendlier environments,” noted Amelia Chen, a tech policy analyst at CB Insights.
The new London office, located in the city’s tech corridor, could accommodate hundreds of additional researchers and engineers. Sources indicate Anthropic plans to focus its European operations on AI safety research – an area where the UK has positioned itself as a leader.
If fully realized, the expansion would make Anthropic one of London’s largest AI employers.
