YouTube has rolled out a new feature allowing users to disable Shorts entirely by setting a zero-minute time limit on the short-form video feed. The update, part of YouTube’s digital wellbeing tools, marks a significant shift from the previous minimum limit of 15 minutes.
The Shorts timer was first introduced in October as part of YouTube’s time management features. In January, the platform expanded these controls, but until now, users couldn’t completely opt out of Shorts. The new zero-minute option appears in both Android and iOS versions of the YouTube app.
Analysts suggest this move reflects YouTube’s response to user feedback about content preferences. “Many long-form content creators and viewers have expressed frustration about Shorts dominating the platform,” said a tech industry analyst familiar with YouTube’s development. “This gives users more control over their experience.”
The update comes as platforms face increasing scrutiny over addictive design features. YouTube’s parent company Alphabet has been expanding digital wellbeing options across its products, including similar time management tools on Google services.
Looking ahead, industry watchers will monitor whether this change affects Shorts’ engagement metrics or if YouTube introduces more granular content preference controls. Some speculate this could lead to similar options for other content types like Live streams or Stories.
