Utah Valley University (UVU) is facing student backlash after selecting Sharon McMahon, a social media commentator, as its graduation speaker. McMahon recently made critical remarks about conservative activist Charlie Kirk following his death, sparking controversy among students.
According to university sources, McMahon was chosen for her expertise in media literacy and civic engagement. However, her social media posts criticizing Kirk, who had spoken at UVU in 2023, have drawn ire from some students who feel her comments were inappropriate.
“Many students feel this selection disregards the diverse political views on campus,” said a student representative who requested anonymity. UVU officials declined to comment on the controversy but reiterated their commitment to free speech.
Analysts note this incident reflects broader tensions on college campuses regarding speaker selections and political expression. The university has not indicated whether it will reconsider McMahon’s invitation.
