The Surrey Wildlife Trust has initiated a fundraising campaign aimed at restoring critical habitats across the county, officials announced Tuesday. The effort targets degraded woodlands, wetlands, and grasslands that support vulnerable species.
According to sources within the Trust, the project will prioritize three key areas: the Thames Basin Heaths, the North Downs, and the Wealden Greensand. ‘These ecosystems have suffered significant biodiversity loss due to urban expansion and climate change,’ said a Trust spokesperson.
Analysts note this aligns with the UK’s 25-Year Environment Plan, which mandates habitat restoration nationwide. The Trust aims to raise £500,000 within six months through corporate partnerships and public donations.
Environmental groups have welcomed the initiative but caution that long-term monitoring will be crucial. ‘Funding is just the first step,’ warned an ecologist familiar with the project. ‘Success depends on sustained community engagement and scientific oversight.’
