Sony’s InZone brand has introduced its first open-back gaming headset, the H6 Air, priced at $199.99. The wired headset adapts the design of the company’s premium $350 H9 II wireless model but features perforated ear cups for an open-back audio experience. Analysts note the move signals Sony’s aggressive push into the PC gaming peripheral market.
The H6 Air maintains the adjustable headband and lightweight construction of its higher-end sibling while omitting wireless functionality. Open-back designs, favored by some audiophiles for their natural soundstage, remain uncommon in gaming headsets due to sound leakage concerns. ‘This is Sony testing the waters with a niche but growing segment,’ said a gaming hardware analyst familiar with the product line.
Sony’s InZone series launched in 2022 targeting PC gamers, a departure from its PlayStation-focused accessories. The brand now includes monitors, headsets, and other peripherals competing with established players like SteelSeries and Razer. Market research suggests the global gaming headset market will grow at 7.8% annually through 2028, driven by esports and streaming culture.
Industry watchers will monitor whether Sony can translate its audio expertise from consumer headphones to competitive gaming gear. The wired H6 Air’s success could determine if more open-back models enter the InZone lineup, potentially including wireless variants. However, some question whether mainstream gamers will prioritize acoustic fidelity over features like noise cancellation in multiplayer environments.
