Snap Inc., parent company of Snapchat, will lay off approximately 1,000 employees—about 10% of its workforce—while simultaneously expanding its artificial intelligence capabilities, according to internal communications obtained by multiple outlets. The restructuring comes amid broader tech industry layoffs and increasing AI adoption across sectors.
Analysts note this marks Snap’s third significant workforce reduction since 2022, with previous cuts totaling 20% of staff. Company executives framed the move as necessary to ‘streamline operations’ and ‘accelerate AI integration,’ particularly in advertising tools and augmented reality features.
Sources familiar with the matter indicate affected employees will receive severance packages averaging 16 weeks’ pay. Snap’s stock rose 3% following the announcement, suggesting investor approval of cost-cutting measures.
Labor economists warn this development reflects a growing trend: “When companies cite AI as replacing jobs, we rarely see those positions return,” said Dr. Helena Miro of the Brookings Institution. “The question is whether new roles will emerge to offset losses.”
Snap’s AI division currently employs 400 engineers and is recruiting for 50 additional specialized positions, according to LinkedIn data. The company plans to showcase new AI-powered creator tools at its April developer summit.
