KYIV, Ukraine — Russian forces launched a devastating attack on Ukraine early Thursday, firing 31 missiles and 636 drones in a coordinated assault that killed at least 14 people and caused extensive damage to buildings and infrastructure, according to Ukrainian officials.
The attack, one of the largest in recent weeks, shattered windows, set cars ablaze, and left several buildings in ruins. Emergency services worked tirelessly to extinguish fires and rescue survivors from the rubble.
Analysts suggest the assault may be part of a broader Russian strategy to weaken Ukrainian defenses ahead of an anticipated counteroffensive. “This level of bombardment is designed to terrorize the civilian population and disrupt military logistics,” said a NATO official speaking on condition of anonymity.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attack in a televised address, vowing to strengthen air defenses and retaliate. “The world must see what Russia is doing,” he said. “We will not be broken.”
The attack comes as Western allies debate further military aid to Ukraine, with some officials warning of escalating tensions. “The situation is dire,” said a U.S. State Department spokesperson. “We are assessing the damage and coordinating with our allies.”
