Rockstar Games, the studio behind the blockbuster Grand Theft Auto franchise, confirmed a cybersecurity breach after hackers demanded ransom for stolen data. The company stated only “low-priority corporate information” was compromised, but did not specify whether player data or unreleased game content was accessed.
The attack follows a growing trend of ransomware targeting major game developers. In 2022, CD Projekt Red suffered a similar breach during Cyberpunk 2077 development. Cybersecurity analysts note gaming companies are particularly vulnerable due to their large digital asset libraries and online player ecosystems.
“While Rockstar claims this was minor, any breach raises concerns about source code protection and player account security,” said a former Ubisoft security engineer speaking anonymously. The hacker group, which remains unidentified, reportedly threatened to release additional data if demands weren’t met.
Industry watchers suggest the incident may accelerate adoption of blockchain-based asset protection systems, which several AAA studios have been testing since the 2023 Capcom leaks.
