PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A suspect accused of a violent axe attack in Providence was arraigned in court on Thursday, according to local law enforcement officials. The incident, which occurred earlier this week, left one victim hospitalized with serious injuries.
Police responded to reports of an assault in the city’s Olneyville neighborhood late Tuesday evening. Witnesses described a chaotic scene where the suspect allegedly wielded an axe, striking the victim multiple times before fleeing. Authorities apprehended the suspect within hours of the attack.
“This was a targeted act of violence, and we are relieved to have the suspect in custody,” a Providence Police Department spokesperson said. The victim, whose identity has not been released, is expected to survive.
Court records indicate the suspect faces charges including assault with a deadly weapon and attempted murder. Bail was denied due to the severity of the allegations and concerns over public safety.
Legal analysts suggest the case could proceed quickly given the clear evidence and witness testimonies. Community leaders have called for increased patrols in the area to reassure residents.
