Meta has increased the prices of its Quest 3 and Quest 3S virtual reality headsets, citing a global RAM shortage that has also led to price adjustments for Sony’s PlayStation 5. The move reflects broader supply chain challenges affecting the tech industry, with analysts warning of potential further disruptions.
The price hike, confirmed by Meta in a statement to retailers, follows similar adjustments by other electronics manufacturers. Industry sources indicate that DRAM chip shortages, exacerbated by production delays and increased demand, are driving up costs across the sector.
“The RAM shortage is real, and it’s hitting multiple segments of the consumer electronics market,” said a supply chain analyst familiar with the situation. “Companies are being forced to pass some of these costs onto consumers.”
Market research firms note that DRAM prices have risen by approximately 15% year-over-year, with spot market rates showing even steeper increases. This comes as smartphone, PC, and gaming console manufacturers compete for limited chip supplies.
Looking ahead, industry watchers suggest the pricing pressures may persist through 2024. “Until new fabrication capacity comes online, we’re likely to see more companies making tough decisions about product pricing,” the analyst added.
