Mercado Libre, Latin America’s largest e-commerce platform, has announced the discontinuation of its cryptocurrency token, Mercado Coin, effective April 17. Users will no longer be able to purchase, sell, or earn cashback using the token but will retain the ability to sell, spend, or convert their coins to local currency until the deadline.
Launched in 2022, Mercado Coin was part of the company’s broader strategy to integrate cryptocurrency into its loyalty rewards system. The token aimed to incentivize user engagement and provide a novel way for customers to earn rewards. However, the project struggled to gain widespread adoption, prompting the decision to shut it down.
Analysts speculate that regulatory challenges and market volatility may have contributed to the decision. “The crypto landscape has become increasingly complex, especially with evolving regulations in Latin America,” said one industry expert. “This move likely reflects a strategic pivot to focus on core business operations.”
Mercado Libre has not disclosed plans for future cryptocurrency initiatives but emphasized its commitment to innovation. The shutdown raises questions about the viability of loyalty-driven cryptocurrencies in volatile markets, signaling a cautious approach by major corporations toward crypto integrations.
