Lidl has announced plans to open more than 50 new stores across the UK, creating nearly 2,000 jobs in the process. The expansion signals the German discount retailer’s continued aggressive growth strategy in Britain’s highly competitive grocery sector.
The new stores will be spread nationwide, with a focus on underserved areas. Analysts note this move comes as discount supermarkets gain market share from traditional rivals during the cost-of-living crisis.
“This investment demonstrates our confidence in the UK market,” a Lidl spokesperson stated, while declining to specify exact locations. Industry sources suggest many openings will target suburban areas where Lidl currently has limited presence.
The expansion follows Lidl’s £500 million investment pledge last year. Retail experts estimate each new store typically creates 30-40 jobs, making the 2,000 figure plausible for 50+ locations.
However, some local business groups express concern about the impact on independent retailers. “While new jobs are welcome, we’ve seen how discount chains can hollow out high streets,” cautioned a spokesperson for the Federation of Small Businesses.
The timeline remains unclear, but construction is expected to begin within 12-18 months. This comes as Tesco and Sainsbury’s accelerate their own convenience store expansions, setting up potential clashes for prime locations.
