Kentucky’s unemployment rate fell to 4.3% in January 2026, according to the latest data released by KYSTATS, the state’s official statistics agency. This represents a 0.2 percentage point decrease from December 2025 and continues a downward trend observed since mid-2025.
The report indicates strongest job growth in healthcare (+3,200 jobs) and manufacturing (+1,800 jobs), while retail trade saw modest declines (-400 jobs). Analysts attribute the improvement to seasonal hiring patterns and ongoing infrastructure projects.
‘These numbers reflect Kentucky’s resilient labor market,’ stated an unnamed KYSTATS official familiar with the report. ‘We’re seeing consistent growth in sectors that pay above-average wages.’
Economists caution that the data doesn’t account for underemployed workers or those who’ve left the workforce. The national unemployment rate currently stands at 3.9%, putting Kentucky slightly above the US average.
Looking ahead, state officials anticipate potential slowdowns in construction hiring during winter months, though federal clean energy initiatives may create new positions by Q2 2026.
