IIM Mumbai has announced the launch of a groundbreaking 4-year undergraduate program in Digital Science and Business Management, marking a significant shift in the institute’s traditional focus on postgraduate education. The program, set to begin in the 2024 academic year, will combine core business principles with emerging digital technologies like AI, blockchain, and data analytics.
According to sources familiar with the development, the curriculum was designed in consultation with industry leaders to address growing demand for professionals who can navigate both technical and managerial challenges. ‘This isn’t just about creating coders or managers, but hybrid professionals who can lead digital transformation,’ an unnamed faculty member told KollegeApply.
The move comes as Indian institutes face increasing pressure to modernize curricula. IIM Mumbai follows similar initiatives by IIM Bangalore’s undergraduate economics program and IIT Delhi’s interdisciplinary courses. Analysts note this could signal a broader trend among elite institutions to capture students earlier in their academic journeys.
However, some education experts question whether the program’s ambitious scope might dilute IIM’s management focus. ‘There’s a risk of creating generalists rather than specialists during a time when deep expertise matters most,’ cautioned Dr. Ananya Sharma, an education policy researcher quoted in The Hindu.
Successful applicants will undergo rigorous selection including aptitude tests and interviews. The program structure includes mandatory internships, capstone projects with industry partners, and optional international exchange terms.
