HERAT, Afghanistan — At least four people were killed when gunmen attacked a picnic spot near the village of Deh Mehri in Afghanistan’s Herat province on Tuesday, according to local officials. The assailants fled the scene before security forces arrived, leaving villagers in shock.

“This was a deliberate attack on civilians enjoying a day out,” said a provincial police spokesperson, who requested anonymity due to security concerns. “We are investigating whether this was a targeted act or part of broader insurgent activity.”

Herat, a relatively stable region in western Afghanistan, has seen sporadic violence since the Taliban regained control of the country in 2021. While the Taliban government has cracked down on ISIS-K and other militant groups, attacks on civilians persist.

Analysts suggest the attack could be retaliation for recent Taliban operations against insurgent hideouts in the region. “This fits the pattern of asymmetric warfare we’ve seen from groups opposed to Taliban rule,” said a Kabul-based security consultant.

The incident raises concerns about the Taliban’s ability to maintain security outside major urban centers, as Afghanistan faces increasing isolation and economic hardship.
