Google has rolled out an update to its AI-powered search mode in Chrome designed to minimize tab switching by keeping the chatbot interface persistently accessible during browsing sessions. The feature, now available to select users, anchors the conversational search tool to the browser window once activated.
The update builds on Google’s ‘Search Generative Experience’ (SGE) launched in 2023, which introduced AI-generated summaries alongside traditional search results. According to sources familiar with the development, engineers sought to address what they called ‘tab fragmentation’ – users opening multiple tabs when interacting with AI search results.
‘This represents Google’s latest attempt to reshape search behavior around AI assistants,’ said a tech analyst familiar with Chrome’s development. Early tests suggest the persistent interface reduces tab counts by approximately 30% during research-intensive sessions.
The implementation comes as browser developers increasingly integrate AI tools directly into navigation interfaces. Microsoft Edge and Opera have introduced similar persistent sidebar implementations for their respective AI features in recent months.
Industry observers note the update may face adoption challenges from users accustomed to traditional tab workflows. Some privacy advocates have also raised concerns about persistent data collection, though Google maintains all processing occurs locally when possible.
Looking ahead, analysts predict this interface approach could become standard across browsers as AI assistants evolve from supplemental tools to primary search interfaces. Google has not confirmed when the feature will see broad release.
