First Mid Bancshares (NASDAQ: FMBH) has drawn investor attention after its shares gained 12% over the past month, outpacing regional bank peers. The Illinois-based lender closed at $32.45 on Thursday, nearing its 52-week high, despite mixed Q2 earnings that showed 3% deposit growth but tighter net interest margins.
Founded in 1865, First Mid operates 67 branches across Illinois, Missouri, and Texas. The $6.8 billion asset bank has expanded through acquisitions, including its 2021 purchase of Blackhawk Bancorp. ‘Recent performance reflects both operational efficiency and speculation about further M&A activity,’ said a banking analyst who requested anonymity due to firm policies.
Valuation metrics present a complex picture. FMBH trades at 1.4x tangible book value – above the 1.1x regional bank average – while its forward P/E of 9.8 remains below the S&P 500 financial sector’s 12.3. ‘The premium suggests investors anticipate above-average growth or takeover potential,’ noted a research report from Keefe, Bruyette & Woods.
Market observers caution that the rally may be vulnerable to shifting rate expectations. With 58% of FMBH’s loan portfolio in commercial real estate, some analysts warn of headwinds if office vacancy rates continue climbing. The bank’s next earnings report on October 24 will test whether fundamentals justify the valuation bump.
