Blackmagic Design has unveiled DaVinci Resolve 21, a major update to its post-production software that now includes advanced photo editing tools, positioning it as a competitor to Adobe’s Lightroom and Photoshop. The update also introduces AI-powered features aimed at video editors, further expanding its appeal beyond traditional color grading.
Industry analysts note this marks a strategic shift for DaVinci Resolve, which has primarily been known as professional video editing software. ‘This moves them into direct competition with Adobe’s Creative Cloud ecosystem,’ said a tech analyst familiar with both platforms. The new photo tools include RAW image support and AI-assisted editing workflows similar to Adobe’s recent AI implementations.
The timing coincides with growing dissatisfaction among some creative professionals about Adobe’s subscription model. However, experts caution that DaVinci Resolve faces an uphill battle against Adobe’s entrenched position. ‘They’ll need to demonstrate superior performance and value to convince photographers to switch ecosystems,’ noted a creative software consultant.
Looking ahead, this development could intensify competition in the creative software market, potentially leading to more innovation and better pricing for users. Some industry watchers speculate this may prompt Adobe to accelerate its own AI feature development.
