The U.S. Department of Defense has appointed Brad Bingham as the new Director and CEO of the Army & Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES), officials confirmed Wednesday. Bingham, a veteran retail executive, will oversee the military’s largest retail and services provider, which operates stores, restaurants, and concessions on bases worldwide.
Bingham brings over two decades of retail leadership experience, including senior roles at major U.S. chains. Analysts note his appointment signals a focus on modernizing military retail operations. ‘This is about bringing best commercial practices to serve military families,’ said a defense official familiar with the decision.
The AAFES, founded in 1895, generates over $8 billion annually in sales and employs approximately 30,000 people. It provides goods and services to active-duty military personnel, retirees, and their families at reduced prices.
Sources indicate Bingham’s priorities will include digital transformation and improving the customer experience. The move comes as military leaders emphasize quality-of-life improvements for service members amid recruitment challenges.
