The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) fields the highest number of crorepati (millionaire) candidates for Assam’s 2026 legislative elections, though none rank among the top five wealthiest contenders, according to a report by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR). The findings highlight the financial profiles of candidates from major parties, with the BJP leading in crorepati representation but trailing in individual wealth rankings.
The ADR report, released this week, analyzed affidavits submitted by candidates across Assam’s electoral districts. While the BJP dominates in the sheer number of crorepati nominees, the wealthiest candidates belong to other parties, including regional players and independents. Analysts suggest this reflects broader economic disparities and funding strategies among political factions.
“Financial muscle often translates to electoral advantage, but it’s not the sole determinant,” said a political analyst familiar with Assam’s electoral dynamics, speaking on condition of anonymity. “Regional parties may field fewer crorepatis overall, but their top candidates could have significant personal wealth.”
The report also notes a rise in average assets among candidates compared to previous elections, signaling increasing financial stakes in Assam’s political arena. With the 2026 polls still two years away, the findings could influence party strategies and voter perceptions of financial transparency and accountability.
